“Good stewards of your timber for over 30 years”.

Natural regeneration of southern pine timber stands is typically accomplished by using either the seed tree or shelter wood method for even -  age management, or the single tree selection or group selection methods of uneven - age management.

The seed tree method of natural regeneration is accomplished by harvesting all but approximately 10 - 15 quality pine saw timber trees per acre.  The residual trees will provide the seed source for the next generation of pine trees in the stand.

The Shelter wood method of natural regeneration is similar to the seed - tree method, with the exception that more trees are left, approximately 30 to 40 trees per acre, to re-seed the stand.

Artificial Regeneration (Plantation) Plantation management is a method of artificial reforestation and is accomplished by planting seedlings, typically pine, at a predetermined spacing on cutover (clear cut) land or open pastures.  This method is typically used by large timber companies landowners who want to grow pine timber, but do not have the option of natural regeneration or anyone who’s primary goal is high yield forestry.

Management cost for plantation management are typically very high due in part to high establishments costs.  However, because the site is usually prepared more thoroughly and spacing of the trees at planting can be manipulated, higher yield and shorter rotations can typically be achieved on good sites.

Marketing Timber

Marketing your timber when you are ready to sell it is the most important aspect of your timber management program.  It is important that the timber products you are selling be advertised in the appropriate markets.  For instance, if you are selling timber in which a certain percentage contains pine trees with the characteristics suitable to be used for telephone poles, you want to make sure the timber is advertised to markets that will pay you the premium price for telephone poles, not lower value pulpwood.

This is where using a competent professional forester will help you the most.  When a forester is cruising or marking the timber to be sold, they know the specifications the mills place on each particular product.  Therefore they will be able to differentiate between each individual product (i.e., saw timber, pulpwood, and poles) and market them accordingly.
